Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) Save Irrawaddy Campaign Music Video
People of Burma including democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi are calling for to review the Ayeyarwaddy Dam project due to the averse affect it will cause on Burma's environment, on Burma's bio-diversity and on Burma's future.
Lo Hsing Han and his son Steven Law (a) Tun Myint Naing run Asia World Ltd which currently has contracts to build MyitSone Dam on the Ayeyarwaddy River north of Myitgyinar. Ten more companies are owned under the group in Singapore by Law's wife, Cecilia Ng.
The Myitsone Dam site is located just 2 miles below the confluence and about 24 miles away from Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State.
The length of the dam is about 499 ft (152 m) and the height is about 499 ft, equivalent to the height of a 50-story building. The surface area of the reservoir is about 295.8 sq mi (766 sq km), about the size of New York City (301 sq mi).
A maximum water depth of the reservoir will be about 950 ft (290 m), approximately the height of a 66-story building. The estimated cost of the Myitsone Dam construction project is about US $3.6 billion.
The total cost for construction of the seven dams and hydroelectric development projects is about US $20 billion. The major construction contractor from the Chinese side is the China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CCGC), and from the Burmese regime side is Asia World Company.
It is strongly believed that Lo Hsing Han's business empire was originally built on narcotic-drug trafficking.
Starting as a local militia leader in the northern Kokang region in 1960, Lo Hsing Han was dubbed the "King of Opium" by US drug enforcement authorities in the 1970s because of large amount of heroin his alleged networks were sending through Thailand.
By 1994, his organization was widely considered among the most heavily armed drug trafficking organizations in Southeast Asia.
Golden Aaron, an Asia World subsidiary, has been linked to China.
Steven Law (a) Tun Myint Naing is the managing director of Golden Aaron, which has now been linked to CNOOC.
Both Lo Hsing Han and Steven Law have been on a US visa blacklist since 1996 for suspected drug trafficking activities.
In February 2008, they were also put on the Treasury Department's sanctions list, along with Asia World Company and subsidiaries Asia World Co Ltd, Asia World Port Management, Asia World Industries Ltd and Asia World Light Ltd for their financial connections to the regime.
Asia World Ltd, Burma's biggest and most diversified conglomerate with interests in industrial development, construction, transportation, import-export and a chain of local supermarkets. It is believed that he also controls several gold mines in Kachin State.
Tun Myint Naing also owns the Magwe United Football Club playing in the Myanmar National League (MNL).
Saving River Ayeyarwaddy is saving Burma and it is duties of all the people of Burma as well as the duties of man-kind to safe-guard the future of the world we are living in.
We also call for China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CCGC) and China's National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) to halt the ties with accused drug kin-pin of Burma.
Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) again calling for Burmese and Chinese regimes to review building Myit-Sone dam in Burma.
Addition, Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) call for all the people of Burma and justice loving people around the world to boycott Lo Hsing Han and his son Steven Law (a) Tun Myint Naing and Law's wife Cecilia Ng's Companies including Asia World Ltd, Golden Aaron, and Magwe United Football Club.

Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) strongly denounced the Irresponsible USDP Regime Failing to Save River Ayeyarwaddy
12 September 2011
Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) strongly denounced the USDP’s Electric Power Minister U Zaw Min’s irresponsible comment saying there is no plan to stop building the Ayeyarwaddy Dam instead the government is pledged to finish building it in the wake of widespread objections.
People of Burma including democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi are calling for to review the Ayeyarwaddy Dam project due to the averse affect it will cause on Burma’s environment, on Burma’s bio-diversity and on Burma’s future.
Addition, Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) call for all the people of Burma and justice loving people around the world to boycott Lo Hsing Han and his son Steven Law (a) Tun Myint Naing and Law’s wife Cecilia Ng’s Companies including Asia World Ltd, Golden Aaron, and Magwe United Football Club.

United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar Tomas Ojea Quintana
Asked by newsmen who surrounded Quintana and Aung San Suu Kyi, the democracy icon said: “I am very much satisfied with my talks with Mr. Quintana. I look upon him as a dependable person with sincere goodwill for promotion of human rights in Myanmar.”
As for Mr. Quintana, he reserved his comments on his talks with Aung San Suu Kyi as well as on the results of his five-day mission for the press conference he will be giving tomorrow evening at the Yangon International Airport before departing Myanmar.
Since his appointment to the post of United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar in May 2008, Quintana has previously come here three times – the first time in August 2008, second time in February 2009 and the third time in February 2010.
In all these three previous visits, Quintana was barred from seeing Aung San Suu Kyi by the previous military government. Thus this is the first time Quintana has the chance to hold talks with Aung San Suu Kyi.
On arrival in Nay Pyi Taw on the first day of his visit on August 21 this year, Quintana was cordially received by Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin.
The state media said Quintana and Wunna Maung Lwin held talks discussing progress of improvement of human rights in Myanmar.
The same day he was received by Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Ko Ko, who happens to be the Chairman of the Myanmar Human Rights Committee.
On his second day of his visit on August 22, Quintana has met and separately held talks with Chief Justice U Tun Tun Oo, Attorney-General U Tun Shin, Minister for Labour U Aung Kyi, Minister for Defence Maj-Gen Hla Min.
The next day on August 23, Quintana separately met and held talks with Speaker of Pyithu Hluttaw Thura U Shwe Mann and Speaker of Amyotha Hluttaw U Khin Aung Myint. Quintana also met and held talks with chairmen of various parliamentary committees.
Political observers here commented that the way Quintana was eagerly received by the authorities of Thein Sein government contrasted with the way he was not warmly received by the previous military government.

Former Political Prisoners & 88 Generation Students Leaders inside Burma
Burma: Democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi and President of the Union U Thein Sein held one-to-one talks
“Following this one hour talks, Aung San Suu Kyi accompanied by U Khun Thar Myint and her personal assistant Daw Su Su Lwin met Daw Khin Khin Win, wife of the President and President’s grand daughter at the President Residence in Nay Pyi Taw,” U Khun Thar Myint told @@ adding that this fifteen minutes meeting was entirely devoted to familiarizing the democracy icon with the President family.
Khun Thar Myint described the 15-minute meeting, which he attended as “very cordial in a friendly atmosphere.”
However so Khun Thar Myint said he had no knowledge of what the President and democracy icon talked for one hour.
Khun Thar Myint added that Aung San Suu Kyi is due to stop over for the night in Nay Pyi Taw as special guest of the government.
For Aung San Suu Kyi ( 66 ), who have all along demanded for dialogue with the Head of State for several years as part of her efforts to achieve national reconciliation with the ruling government, her desire for such a dialogue has now been fulfilled though nobody knows yet what the President and Nobel Laureate talked about during one hour.
This morning Aung San Suu Kyi accompanied by her personal assistant Daw Su Su Lwin and her chief NLD security officer U Khun Thar Myint was taken to Nay Pyi Taw by government car.
In contrast to the rumours about her being taken to Nay Pyi Taw to attend the national level workshop on Reforming Economic Development, which was held in Nay Pyi Taw this afternoon, were all dashed to ground.
Yangon, August 19 -- President of Republic of the Union of Myanmar U Thein Sein received Daw Aung San Suu Kyi at his office in Nay Pyi Taw at 4 pm this afternoon, the state-owned TV announced at 8;30 pm this evening.
The TV also showed footage of the meeting between Thein Sein and Aung San Suu Kyi.
“During the meeting, President U Thein Sein and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi cordially and frankly discussed prospects for cooperation on matters that would benefit the country and the people while keeping aside different opinions,” the TV said.
The TV also announced that during the meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi, President Thein Sein took the opportunity to explain to her the endeavours being made by his government in the interests of the country and the people.
Thought the TV did not announce how long this one-to-one talks took place, NLD security officer Khun Thar Myint, who accompanied the democracy icon to Nay Pyi Taw said the meeting lasted one hour.

'88 Generation Students' Leaders Welcome Suu Kyi, Aung Kyi Talks
Min Ko Naing, Ko Ko Gyi and Htay Kywe, all of whom are serving 65-year priosn sentences, managed to get their comments to the public one week after the first meeting between Suu Kyi and a member of Burma's new government took office in late March.
Min Ko Naing, who is being held in Keng Tung Prison in eastern Shan State, said through an information channel that he thinks the meeting between Suu Kyi and Aung Kyi was “a good step.”
A message from Ko Ko Gyi, who is in Mong Set Prison in Shan State, said he supports the meeting and calls for more meaningful dialogue. Ko Ko Kyi, who is described by colleagues as a “strategist,” said that the pro-democracy leader should take a wider leading role in the development of democracy and peace in Burma.
Htay Kywe’s brother-in-law, Pyo Min Thein, who is also member of the 88 Generation Students group, told The Irrawaddy on Thursday that Htay Kywe said the meeting between Suu Kyi and Aung Kyi was a positive step. Htay Kywe is serving his sentence in Buthitaung Prison, Arakan State.
“Even though the 88 Generation Students leaders have sacrificed a lot for the country, they are always optimistic. Therefore our party take their concerns seriously,” said Win Htain, one of Suu Kyi’s close aides at the National League for Democracy(NLD), in response to the 88 Generation Students leaders’ messages.
The 88 Generation Students group was formed by former student leaders who led the mass uprising against dictator Ne Win’s Burmese Socialist Programme Party in the summer of 1988, during which at least 3,000 people were killed by government security forces.
Throughout 1988-1991, most of the student leaders were arrested and given long prison sentences. Min Ko Naing was arrested in 1989 and spent 15 years in prison. Ko Ko Gyi was arrested in 1991 and imprisoned and released in 2005.
After their release, the former student leaders formed the 88 Generation Students group, which became a prominent dissident movement while Suu Kyi was under house arrest. The group undertook various political activities until its leaders were once again arrested on August 21, 2007 for their involvement in a protest march against fuel price hikes and given matching 65-year sentences.
The former student leaders reportedly take the same position—that they will not make an appeal to get individual sympathy from the government.

The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. But I should mean that every man should receive those papers and be capable of reading them.
– Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), author of the Declaration of Independence and 3rd president of the United States
An invasion of armies can be resisted, but there is no resistance to an invasion of ideas. – Victor Hugo (Comment: Let truth be the invader … let facts be the bullets that slay every fallacy … because all that is false, and all that rests on what is false - including governments – is a house of cards that cannot stand.)
It is 30 years since we started this work. Activities that devastate the environment and societies continue unabated. Today we are faced with a challenge that calls for a shift in our thinking, so that humanity stops threatening its life-support system. We are called to assist the Earth to heal her wounds and in the process heal our own – indeed, to embrace the whole creation in all its diversity, beauty and wonder. This will happen if we see the need to revive our sense of belonging to a larger family of life, with which we have shared our evolutionary process. In the course of history, there comes a time when humanity is called to shift to a new level of consciousness, to reach a higher moral ground. A time when we have to shed our fear and give hope to each other. That time is now. - Wangari Matthai, Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech
… the old Lakota was wise. He knew that man’s heart, away from nature, becomes hard; he knew that lack of respect for growing, living things soon led to lack of respect for humans too. So he kept his youth close to its softening influence. – Luther Standing Bear
My religion is kindness. – the Dalai Lama
Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever. - Mohandas K. Gandhi
Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire. - William Butler Yeats
Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least. - Goethe
… a lily or a rose never pretends, and its beauty is that it is what it is. – J. Krishnamurti
If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading. - Lao Tzu
It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop. – Confucius
I see little of more importance to the future of our country and our civilization than full recognition of the place of the artist. If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him ... the highest duty of the writer, the composer, the artist is to remain true to himself and to let the chips fall where they may. In serving his vision of the truth, the artist best serves his nation. And the nation which disdains the mission of art invites the fate of Robert Frost's hired man, the fate of having "nothing to look backward to with pride, and nothing to look forward to with hope". - President John F. Kennedy, Remarks at Amherst College, October 26, 1963
Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art. - Leonardo da Vinci
If you hear a voice within you say "you cannot paint," then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced. - Vincent Van Gogh
The future isn’t in the future – we’re creating it now!

Burma Insight: Daw Aung San Suu Kyi met with Aung kyi
This announcement, which has all the characteristics of the beginning of the breakthrough between democratic opposition and the new government, was emphatically made by Minister Aung Kyi to the awaiting newsmen, who had been awaiting within the compound of the State guest house since the start of the talks.
Speaking on her behalf to the newsmen, Aung San Suu Kyi said: “As for me, I always look forward to the interests of the country and the equality of the people. I do hope that this talks will benefit the country.”
Aung Kyi is not a stranger to Aung San Suu Kyi. While serving as Minister for Labour under SPDC government, Aung Kyi was concurrently assigned as Minister for Relations between the military junta and Aung San Suu Kyi.
In this capacity Aung Kyi had held talks with Aung San Suu Kyi for nine times during the time of the military junta. His last talks with Aung San Suu Kyi was late in 2009.

“Both sides discussed possible areas where they could cooperate for the good of the people.
“In discussing as such, matters concerning rule of law, eradication of misunderstanding and other matters for the good of the people were included.
“Both side agreed to meet again at an appropriate time.”
The above is the full-text of the news statement read out by Aung Kyi.

7th July Memorial in Burma
Burma army Chief of Staff General Ne Win and cohorts threaten the U Nu’s elected democratic government to hand over power and formed a Caretaker government from 1958 to 1960 for eighteen months. General Ne Win and cohorts had a good taste of power after 18 months of the Caretaker Government, and they regarded U Nu as a week leader and was not strong enough to govern the country. They openly told the Pyidaungsu Governments that the army had to fight vigorously and they are not happy to even protect and give security service to those corrupt political leaders.
General Ne Win took over the power second time in March of 1962. Military coups were quite popular in those days of early sixties in Asia, Africa and in Latin America. Now it is out of fashion and most of them reverted back to the civilian rule. Just after the Military coup of General Ne Win, he quelled the dissents and demonstrations with his army brutally. He even dynamited the Students Union in the Rangoon University while some student leaders were still inside.
General Ne Win’s first speech challenged or threatened the unarmed Burmese Citizens that he would respond knife with knife, spear with spear if any one dare to challenge him and his lap-dog army, in Burmese,” Dhar dhar chin_Lhan lhan chin shin mae”.
In his last farewell speech he warned the Burmese citizens that next time if HIS Army had to be called to calm the uprising there is no vocabulary in the BURMA ARMY’s guiding manuals to shoot up into the air for warning. Burma Army would shoot straight to the target, in other words Tatmadaw declared its “SHOOT TO KILL” policy even on unarmed civilians.General Ne Win took over in the early morning of March 2nd, 1962. There was an important announcement over the radio from the Burma Broadcasting Service. We heard marching songs being played and then the announcement came regarding the taking over of the country by the military and about the formation of the Revolutionary Council. There were 17 names mentioned as members of the Revolutionary Council.
Rangoon university student protests started against the Military coup on 6 July 1962. On the 7th of July 1962 there were demonstrations against the Ne Win’s military government and the government retaliated with severe measures. Aung Gyi and Tin Pe were the most senior officers and Sein Lwin was the field commanding officer in the university region. No on exactly know who gave the orders to open fire.
On July 7, over 130 stubborn or diehard or brave would be martyr students who were demonstrating in the student’s union building in the campus of Rangoon University were dynamited and brutally killed by the army.
The historic student’s union building was destroyed into pieces. The 7 July student’s massacre was merely a blood-stained on the Tatmadaw but they could not suppress the students’ spirit of going on fighting against the militarism. The arrest, torture and imprisonment could not crush the spirit of the fighting peacock or the revolutionary student protests.
When the Students’ Union building was dynamited with some of the students inside our heart sank and nearly broke. All the students, parents and the whole population felt very hurt up to the present time especially on this auspicious or rather a notorious day. The 7th July is the 9-11 for all the Burmese.
Ne Win blamed Aung Gyi and Aung Gyi pointed back to Ne Win as a responsible leader. But the real butcher who pulled the trigger was SEIN LWIN. (During the 1967 Student Festival in Mandalay, there was a small fight between the students. One of the son of Butcher Sein Lwin boasted amongst his friends that to quell that student unrest was a minor thing for his father who had shoot and killed a lot of students and dynamited the student’s union building on 7th July. And the whole Mandalay knew that the Anglo-Burmese Primary School teacher from St. Peters School was teaching English daily to that illiterate North-West Division Commander.)
No wonder there was a popular rallying slogan during 8888 because Ne Win put Sein Lwin as his successor Prime Minister after his resignation:
“Sein Lwin Chauk Tan_Tasauk Kan.”,
“Sein Lwin Chauk Tan_sauk yan loke myi”.
“San ta pyi sae nga kyat_Sein Lwin khaung ko pyat”.
“Sein Lwin Phar Kyo_Hto’ Kyo” e.t.c.
Ne Win was a drop out at Inter class for Bio and could not pursue his dreams to become a Medical Doctor. But he managed to snatch the wife of Dr Toke Gyi , Daw Khin May Than who was the daughter of famous Professor Dr Ba Than. Curiously both Ne Win and Dr Ba Than were notorious for womenisation.
Ne Win was notorious for never finishing any book except Adolph Hitler’s book, MEIN KAMPS. (Note this is not a satire or just tried to run down on Ne Win but the truth!)
And he was the one to demolish the very famous “Burmese Research Association” just because one of the professors got drunk and touch his wife Daw Khin May Than during the association’s dinner. He was shot and killed on the spot and the precious Burma Research Association was disbanded since then.
According to the General Ne Win, educated class or intellectuals are undecided, ignorant and corrupted class not to be trusted in their ‘Socialist’ revolution. Actually as a military dictator, he knew that he could not fool the educated class easily. The intelligent class always uses their heads (brains) and use to question and analyze each and every order. The dictators and especially Tatmadaw leaders never like that attitude. Subordinates must always obey the command given to them. They have no right to think whether it is right or wrong, just or not.
Intellectuals have no place under Military rulers. If do not want to keep their mouth shut, they must be put into detention or must leave the country to avoid the dangerous consequences.
In civilized countries the scholar is always placed above the ‘man of war’ believing that
“ Nations which trusted the gun perished by it earlier”.
But in Myanmar under the Military rulers the opposite of the above rule is always correct.
For Myanmar Military, power comes out from the barrel of the gun only. The might is always right for them.
“The evil that men do lives after them…”
Julius Caesar III ii.75,.by William Shakespeare
Yes, all the perpetrators of 7th July Ne Win, Sein Lwin and ? Aung Gyi ? are no more on earth. But their evil of Massacring Students on this day would be remembered forever. Since that day students became the RESISTENCE SYMBOL and used to spearhead the successive uprisings against the illegal Military Rulers.
The 7th July is the 9-11 for all the Burmese.
The spirit of 7 July will last forever.

É a verdade. Por isso, é também a verdade que sem honrar 1.990 resultados das eleições e realização das eleições farsa em 2010 foram ilegítimos. Foreign scholars withdrew from a planned study meeting at the National League for Democracy (NLD) headquarters after pressure from the Burmese government, according to sources.
Win Htein, of the NLD, told The Irrawaddy that many scholars were very keen to come and meet the opposition party's leader Aung San Suu Kyi and train its members, but their planned visit had to be been canceled.
The group were due to lecture students at the Bayda Institute from June 6 to 25 before addressing NLD members from June 20 to 28, but now even the first session has been moved to pro-government NGO Myanmar Egress instead.
“I think Kyaw Yin Hlaing, who currently works in Hong Kong, is afraid the government will revoke his passport if he speaks to NLD members. If Kyaw Yin Hlaing came to visit the NLD he could get into trouble, but he should still take the risk to find out what the result would be,” said Win Htein.
Dr. Kyaw Yin Hlaing is director of Myanmar Egress and also assistant professor of the Department of Asian and International Studies at the City University of Hong Kong.
Myanmar Egress is controversial for being closely associated with individuals connected to the Burmese Chamber of Commerce, and Kyaw Yin Hlaing also supported last year's sham election in Burma.
Htike Zaw Oo, from Tavoy Township, Tenasserim Division, is studying at the Bayda Institute and says he feels cheated by the renowned foreign-based professors who have shunned the seat of learning.
“At first we were very happy that professors from foreign countries would be teaching us. We have been preparing for the training for nearly three months. But when the fixed date arrived they [professors] canceled these plans very easily,” said Htike Zaw Oo.
The NLD study course on “the principles of political science” was the first offered by the party for two decades and was scheduled to be taught by almost a dozen foreign scholars. Young NLD members from across Burma have already arrived in Rangoon to attended the session.
“The teachers did not arrive at the opening ceremony of the Badya Institute and it is hard for them to come to the NLD. Although they did not come to the opening of the Bayda Institute, they are still teaching at Myanmar Egress. It is like a balloon which has been pierced with a needle,” said Win Htein.
“We have been planning this tuition since March but Kyaw Yin Hlaing said on the phone that he cannot give the lecture because the government put pressure on him. The professors would be teaching at Myanmar Egress and Bayda at the same time,” said Myo Yan Naung Thein of Bayda Institute.
The Irrawaddy contacted Kyaw Yin Hlaing but he refused to comment.
Burmese scholars Kyaw Yin Hlaing, Tin Maung Maung Than and US attorney Thi Han Myo Nyun will all contribute to the training program.
They will be joined by foreign scholars Robert Taylor, Robert Gregory, Martin Painter, Mark Thompson, Federico Ferrara and Brad Williams from City University of Hong Kong; Michael Montesano from Singapore's Institute of South East Asia Study; Eric Thompson from the National University of Singapore; and N. Ganesan from the Hiroshima Peace Institute in Japan.
